February 25 declared a special holiday for schools

ILOILO CITY, Feb. 16 (PIA6). February 25, Friday, has been declared as a special holiday for all schools nationwide to mark the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

The EDSA Revolution Anniversary is the only special holiday for schools listed under Proclamation No. 84 that declares the regular holidays, special (non-working) days, and special holiday for the year 2011 which was signed on December 20, last year.

According to a Malacanang report, this year’s celebration carrying the theme “Pilipino Ako, Ako Ang Lakas ng Pagbabago” will start on Feb. 17 and ends on Feb. 27 highlighted by a series of activities.

President Benigno S. Aquino III will lead the boodle lunch which is expected to be participated in by some 2,500 people along Edsa strip to rekindle the spirit of sharing that transpired 25 years ago.

The Malacanang report said that the Edsa strip will be full of food and souvenir stalls on the 25th while the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency will also hold a job fair featuring 5,000 overseas jobs.

Other activities include flag raising ceremony at the People Power Monument at Edsa, an ecumenical mass at Edsa Shrine and the reenactment of the “salubong” where the military and the civilians meet at the Edsa strip, a medical mission at Camp Aguinaldo, sports, entrepreneurial and cultural activities.

There will be also launching of books on the People Power Revolution, photo exhibits, planting of 50,000 trees, unveiling of markers, cultural shows, Freedom Tours and an OPM concert.

On Feb. 23, a 40-hour vigil in 25 churches across the country will start and will end on Feb. 25.

On February 26, a Kalayaan Marker will be unveiled and the personalities who played significant roles during the Edsa people Power Revolution will be given recognition in Malacanang. A People Power Run on the 27th will cap the celebrations.

Former Government Service Insurance System Chairman and now Commissioner of the People Power Commission Cesar Sarino said in the Malacanang report that the prudent but meaningful celebration aims to rekindle the EDSA spirit of sharing, giving and caring.
